An Irish Country Doctor
by Patrick Taylor

You have got to read this book. It is the story of a newly appointed doctor who joins the practice of older, crotchety doctor, in Ulster Province, Northern Island, Dr. Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly. While at first the new doctor, Barry Laferty, judges O’Reilly to be totally incompetent and foolish, he comes to understand that the older man is both compassionate and effective. The book takes you through myriad characters, all of whom are kindly portrayed by stories and sayings. All, that is, except the Councillor, Mr. Bishop, who is powerful and cruel. Interesting sayings pepper the book with humor and imagination. Take the words of the doctor’s cook and house keeper, Kinky, Mrs. Kincaid. After seeing a James Bond movie, or as she names it, a “double-oh-seven film,” she remarks saucily. “I’d not mind having that Sean Connery’s slippers under my bed, so.” Happy endings due to the cleverness of Dr. O’Reilly leave you smiling.

The Naked Truth
by Leslie Morgan

Ms. Morgan is an internationally known commentator, author, and columnist. She has two TED videos. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design; this is a company which hosts conferences on current matters. In this book, she narrates how her life changed with the decision of her husband to leave her. Leslie decides to go on a year-long search for a new partner. She meets five men, who attract her in various ways and circumstance. This reviewer has decided to simply state what the book jacket says. Too much would be given away and probably poorly explain were he to provide more information. It is a fascinating read by and about an extraordinary woman.

Sissy a Coming of Gender Story
by Jacob Tobia

This is the extraordinary story of a extraordinary person. Jacob wishes to be known as someone who non-binary, that is, one who is both male and female in gender. The term gender is not synonymous with sex. “They” [note: I am deliberately following Jacob’s self-description; “they” not “he”] is an “summa cum laude” graduate of Duke University. They ran across the Brooklyn Bridge while wearing 5” heels in 8 ½ or 9 minutes. The run was to gain funds to restore the Ali Forney Center. The Center is dedicated to service the needs of NYC LGBTQ homeless youth. The previous Center was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy.
